Nutrition and Wellness

Grade Level: 10-12

Students will determine what wellness is, evaluate their own wellness, and examine personal life choices. The course includes the study of nutrients, MyPyramid, serving sizes, restaurant menu nutrition, special dietary needs and reading and understanding nutrition labels. Topics include: wellness trends, managing wellness, self-esteem and self-image. Food preparation is a part of this class. Basic knowledge of cooking utensils and kitchen safety is covered. Students will walk in class for 20-30 minutes twice a week. Students will wear a pedometer when walking and then record the length of their walk and number of calories burned.
